This Alternative tour looks at the modern side of Amsterdam, how we became the international liberal paradise we are known for, and specifically looks at the time period following WW2 into modern-day Amsterdam. We are going to look at the Provo movement which pushed for Amsterdam to become this liberal city, including bike use, coffeeshops, affordable housing and general liberal policies. We’ll look at the street art culture; how exactly coffeeshops work, what goes on at smart shops, and also talk about squatting culture; how it relates to the housing crisis and the New Market riots of the 1970s.
Please note that it’s being operated via Sandemans New Europe – groups sizes tend to be less than 10 but officially can have a max of 30 people per tour. This is my tour, they just handle marketing for this tour for me.
Leaves from Dam Square just next to the national monument (large stick-like monument across from Royal Palace) at 3pm. Before hand you’ll see people holding Red Umbrellas. I will have a red name badge. Please arrive 15minutes early, but please be advise that at 3pm Dam Square can be very busy.
